Optical recording elements comprising tetrasubstituted phthalocyanine dyes

An optical recording element comprising a substrate and as a recording medium a layer comprising a dye having a nucleus of general formula (I): in which: each Y and Z independently represent a hydrogen atom or -XR wherein X represents S, Se or Te, and R represents an organic radical; with the proviso that one and only one of Y and Z on each ring must be other than H, and, M represents two hydrogen atoms, a metal or an oxy-metal group. Dyes (I) have high thermal stability, strong adsorption in the near infrared, and relatively high solubility in organic solvents.
