The equipment determines the distance to the water surface from a datum mark on the outside of a ship's hull. It has a ray-emitter and receiver (1,2) for mounting outside the ship in a fixed position in relation to the datum mark. Connected to this, a signal-controlling and processing unit receives the ray (3) reflected from the surface of the water (4). This determines the distance from the time interval between ray emission and reception.
