A portable cellular telephone 1 is adapted to have removably connected thereto a battery 2 selected from at least two different battery types. The resistance of a resistor 7 in the battery 2 identifies the battery type which can be detected in the telephone 1 by means of a voltage source 10, a voltage sensor 13 and a resistor 11 forming a potential divider with resistor 7. The types of battery may be low and high energy versions of batteries having essentially the same chemical and physical composition, or batteries of different chemical and/or physical composition. When the telephone 1 is coupled to a battery charger, a control signal is generated by a microprocessor 9 so that a charging mode compatible with the battery type in use is established. The microprocessor 9 may disable the telephone if it detects an unrecognisable battery, ie. without a resistor having an expected value. The battery temperature indicated by a thermistor 6 may be used to compensate battery voltage levels monitored during recharging to give a more accurate indication of charge state. <IMAGE> |
