Device with reduced interface resistance - between conductive solid (electrode) and ion-conductive polymer (membrane)

In a device consisting of a solid body (a) (having the properties of an electrical conductor, semiconductor or hole conductor due to mobility of electrons or holes) in contact with a (semi-) solid body (6) (having a polymer matrix in which electric charge transport occurs by ion mobility), the novelty is that electrical or electro-chemical interface resistance between the bodies is reduced by at least one substance capable of forming a redox pair. Either at least one of the two components of the redox pair has lipophilic properties or a further lipophilic component, which interacts with at least one of the redox pair components, is present. Prodn. of the device involves applying to the solid body (a) either (i) the redox pair-forming substance(s) and then the (semi-) solid body (b); or (ii) the (semi-) solid body (6) which contains the redox pair-forming substance(s) in its polymer matrix. USE/ADVANTAGE - The device is esp. an ion-sensitive device for determining concns. or activities of anions and cations in aq. media. Interface resistance between the ion-conductive polymeric portion (membrane) and the electron or hole conductor (electrode) is eliminated or reduced.
