<p>PURPOSE: To make a projector compact by extending the axis of radiation optical path of a radiation light beam, which is made incident on a light valve and reflected by this light valve, perpendicularly to the respective normals of planes of the light valves. CONSTITUTION: A line for propagating the main light beam of radiation light beams is extended perpendicularly to the respective normals of planes of light valves 41 and 42. Therefore, since the radiation light beam to be made incident on the light valves 41 and 42 is made incident while being inclined and the beam to be reflected is reflected while being inclined, these two beams are split, a polarization-sensitive beam splitter can be omitted, and the light valves 41 and 42 can be formed so that the modulated radiation light beam can have the same polarizing direction as the incident radiation light beam. Thus, two functions for splitting the beam generated by a radiation light source into color sub-beams and synthesizing the sub-beams reflected and modulated by the light valves can be executed only by one set of color selection mirrors.</p> |
