The purpose of the invention is to avoid a build up of particle and debris loaded lapping compound at the inner boundary of the lapping ring face (5.3), i.e. the so-called 'Weiszenberg Effect'. The ring is driven about its axis by a shaft which is attached to the ring via a universal or cardan joint. To break up the shearing force directing the particles towards the centre boundary, the ring is provided with narrow slots (5.4) which divide the lapping surface into a number of separate segments (5.5). ADVANTAGE - Better surface finish and higher productivity.
