A 2-thiophene acetic acid compound of formula (I): in which: R represents an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a halogen atom; is prepared by decarbalkoxylating an alkylmalonate of formula (IV): in which R, R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above and Alk1 and Alk2 are the same or different and each represents an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The 2-thiophene acetic acid compound is an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals. The alkylmalonate used is itself claimed per se.
