Polypeptides having an amino acid sequence which is derived from the 190 kD (1 kD = 1000 Dalton) precursor of the predominant merozoite surface antigens of the K1 isolate of P. falciparum are described. These polypeptides are capable of an immune response against various isolates of P. falciparum. Immunogenic compositions and vaccines which contain a polypeptide described above, antibodies which are produced by these polypeptides, DNA sequences which code for such a polypeptide, replicable microbial vectors which contain such a DNA sequence and microorganisms which are transformed using such a vector are additionally described. Moreover, processes for the production of the polypeptides, the immunogenic compositions, the immunogenic compositions, the microorganisms and the abovementioned antibodies and the use of these polypeptides or immunogenic compositions for the immunisation of mammals against malaria are described. |
