PURPOSE:To automatically determine a general focus area to an arbitrary object and to automatically adjust the focus to an object existing in its area by selecting an area in which it is presumed that a principal object exists from in plural areas and executing the focal adjustment in accordance with distance information corresponding to the selected area. CONSTITUTION:In an area image sensor 21 in which an object image is formed, its light receiving part is divided into nine focus areas 1 - 9. The output of an output value processing circuit 28 is supplied to a focus area selecting circuit 29, and in the circuit 29, one of nine focus areas 1 - 9 is selected, based on the output of the circuit 28. When one of the focus areas 1 - 9 is selected, range finding data corresponding to its area is read out of a RAM 25, and since a photographic lens is driven actually in accordance with the range finding data, the focus is adjusted to an object to be photographed, existing in the area selected finally. In such a manner, with respect to an arbitrary object, a general focus area is determined automatically, and the focus can be adjusted automatically to the object existing in its area. |
