Catalyst compositions comprising a Group VIII metal and a tetrakisphosphine of the general formula (R<1>R<2>P)4R<5>, wherein R<1> and R<2> represent identical or different optionally polarly substituted hydrocarbyl groups and R<5> represents a tetravalent organic group which connects the four phosphorus atoms and has such a structure that there are at least two carbon atoms between every two phosphorus atoms, and a process for the preparation of polymers of carbon monoxide with one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds using such a catalyst composition.
