Surface covering boards 80 are given an improved visual appearance by a surface texture obtained from one or more fine particulate materials distributed in different ways in different areas of a primary surface. Particulate material is applied dry to the surface and is retained thereon by coating layers, advantageously applied before and after the particulate material, preferably in the form of aqueous emulsion paints that act as adhesive for the particles. A pattern of areas 82 of board free of particulate material may be provided together with areas 84 having a layer of particulate material thereon.
