PURPOSE: To give special brightness to the surface of a refined workpiece by employing an aqueous solution in a burnishing step that includes about 0.01 to 1.5 weight percent of a phosphate compound and about 0.2 or less weight percent of an organic slip agent and is used at a pH of 8.5 to 10.5. CONSTITUTION: After all the bare metal surfaces are subjected to a chemical conversion, the resultant lumps of components are subjected to agitation in a similar unit together with an aqueous solution at least substantially inactive to metal so that the conversion coatings are removed effectively or that the metal surfaces are finished or substantially burnished. The aqueous solution used includes 0.01 to 1.5 weight percent of a phosphate compound selected from the group of water-soluble tetrapyrophosphate or hexametaphosphate and about 0.2 or less weight percent of an organic slip agent, and is used at a pH of 8.5 to 10.5. The slip agent includes a composition that adheres to the metal surfaces at such a pH to give them lubricity. |
