Means for indexing a rotatable and axially movable shaft 12 in a support 11, the shaft having first and second grooves 15, 14, comprises at least one spring loaded member mounted on the support and adapted to engage either one of the grooves to locate the shaft in a first or second axial position, the member normally engaging the first groove 15 to locate the shaft in a first axial position, and disengaging means 22 adapted to be removed by the shaft 12 to disengage the spring loaded member or members from the first groove during a first part of the rotation of the shaft, thereby storing energy in the member or members and to cause axial movement of the shaft during a second part of the rotation of the shaft, thereby aligning the second groove 14 with the member or members, the disengaging means then becoming free of the shaft and being returned to its initial position by virtue of the release of the stored energy of the member or members thereby allowing the latter to engage the second groove 14. As shown, in which the invention is applied to a control timer (not shown) and in which the shaft 12 is coupled to switch operating cams 13, a pair of spring members is used constituted by the free ends 19, 20 of a "hairpin" spring, the arrangement being such that when the shaft 12 is rotated, a pin 21 on the shaft rides up a ramp 23 on the means 22, which is in the form of a plate slidable in an arcuate slot in the support 11, to move the plate in the direction of arrow 27 thereby lifting the ends 19, 20 of the spring from the groove 15 until a flange 28 abuts the support. Continued rotation of the shaft 12 then moves the latter axially in the direction of arrow 29, Fig. 4 (not shown) until the pin 21 rides over the flange 28 whereafter the spring displaces the plate back to its original position, when the spring ends are then free to close on to the groove 14 in which position the shaft is in a position axially which corresponds to the "off position" of the timer. |
