A rotary or non-rotary tool-holder comprises a tubular socket 5 to receive a pilot portion 3 of a tool shank, means la, 9a to form a pressure-tight seal between each end of the socket and the pilot portion, and means to inject fluid under pressure into the chamber so formed to permit entry of a further portion 4 of the tool shank into the socket, the latter portion having a cross-section larger than the unexpanded socket. A pressure of 9,000 lbs./sq. in. is used with a mild steel socket '/8-inch thick. When the pressure is released, the tool is gripped by the contracting socket. An ejector plunger 16 is provided. The holder may secure a drill in a lathe tail-stock. |
