A method and apparatus for cleaning filter elements (68) that are vertically positioned within a filter vessel (52) that has a tube sheet (66) dividing the filter vessel (52) into a lower filter compartment (62) and an upper plenum compartment (64). A fixed volume of backwash liquid is rapidly directed from the plenum compartment (64) above the tube sheet (66) through the filter elements (68) into the filter compartment (62) that has been drained of liquid. The rapid movement of the backwash liquid is a result of a pressure differential between the plenum compartment (64) and the filter compartment (62). The volume of backwash liquid is maintained above the tube sheet (66) by a pressurized condition in the filter compartment (62), which volume may be changed by adjusting the pressure in the filter compartment (62). <IMAGE> |
