PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound from a solid phase industrially and advantageously by distilling ethylation reaction product of benzene compound such as benzene or ethylbenzene to give a tetraethylbenzene fraction, crystallizing the fraction under pressure into a liquid phase and the solid phase. CONSTITUTION:A benzene compound consisting essentially of benzene, mono- triethylbenzene is a mixture thereof is ethylated with an ethylating agent in the presence of preferably Friedel-Crafts catalyst, then subjected to rearrangement reaction in the presence of the catalyst to give an ethylation reaction product, which is distilled to give a tetraethylbenzene fraction. Then the fraction is crystallized under pressure, separated into a liquid phase and a solid phase, preferably the liquid phase is returned to the ethylation reaction process or rearrangement reaction process and high-purity 1,2,4,5-tetraethylbenzene useful as a raw material for vinylbenzens or benzenepolycarboxylic acids is selectively collected from the solid phase in high yield. |
