PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency of a nuclear reactor by making a part of steam passing through an extension riser collide with the nuclear reactor pressure container for separating water, and controlling the amount of steam flowing in a steam drier with a control valve, and obtaining the load-following capability. CONSTITUTION: Subcooled water present in a downcomer area 18 flows down through an annular area 22 between the nuclear reactor pressure container 10 and core 20, enters a core lower plenum area 24, and further flows in a fuel assembly arranged in the core 20. Then, mixture of water and steam enters a chimney 26 fitted above the core 20. Here, the extension riser 28 including a tubular member is fitted above the chimney 26 by using an annular plate or nip 30 and a series of openings is bored in the tubular member. The flow of steam-water two-phase mixture passing through the openings causes slight rotation. Consequently, the water in the two-phase mixture is discharged out radially to strike on the internal surface of the container 10, so that it is separated fro the two-phase mixture. Further, steam remaining nearby the tube 28 is discharged from a steam outlet 14 through the steam drier 36.
