In a computer system including at least two computers (100, 200) coupled by an electronic means (150) for passing information between the computers, according to the principles of this invention, a virtual network executive (10, 20) is installed in each computer (100, 200). The network executive (102, 202) in a first mode of operation is used to send and receive information between computers (100, 200) in the system. In a second mode of operation, the virtual network executive (202) in all the computers (200) in the system save one are configured to service requests from the one computer (100). This configuration of one computer in a system of computers controlling and using the other computers is referred to as a virtual computer. The virtual network executive (202) adjusts the transmission parameters, packet size and transmission speed when errors are detected in communication between computers (100, 200). |
