Patients experiencing adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have elevated levels of tumour necrosis factor- alpha (TNF) in their bronchoalveolar lavages. This is so even in the absence of overt sepsis. Antibody to TNF (Anti-TNF) may therefore be an effective treatment for ARDS, especially when administered directly to the lung surface, for example as an aerosol. |
