PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high selectivity and yield on an industrial scale at a low cost while easily recovering catalyst by vacuum thermal distillation, etc., by reacting an aromatic nitro compound with an OH-containing compound and CO in the presence of a specific two component catalyst exhibiting no corrosive action. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III such as N- phenylcarbamic acid methyl ester can be produced by reacting an aromatic nitro compound of formula I (Ar is aromatic group) (e.g. nitrobenzene) with an OH-containing compound of formula II (R is organic residue) (e.g. methanol) and CO in the presence of a catalyst consisting of Pd or its compound (e.g. PdCl2) and a heteropolyacid containing Mo or V or its salt (e.g. 12- molybdophosphoric acid lithium salt) at 100-300 deg.C under 1-300atm pressure using a solvent (e.g. diethyl ketone) as necessary. The above two component catalyst has high stability and excellent cocatalyzing effect, exhibits high carbonylation activity and selectivity to aromatic urethane, is free from corrosivity and can be easily recovered and reused. |
