In order to insert a web of material (1) into a processing machine, especially a machine for winding paper or cardboard webs into rolls (3), an elastic, tension-resistant belt (15) is introduced into the web guide path by means of compressed air flowing substantially laminarly and parallel to a guide member (13) arranged along the web guide path. The start of the material web (1) is then secured to the belt (15) and the web (1) is drawn through the web guide path with the belt (15). A device for implementing the process has a web guide member (13) running parallel along the web guide path and at a slight distance therefrom, especially a U-shaped channel along which flat-section nozzles are regularly spaced.
