The water softener in an automatic washing machine or dishwasher is regenerated after a fraction, esp a half, of the water required for the washing programme has passed through it, and a further regeneration is carried out after the last softened water rinsing stage in the programme is complete. A first regeneration may be performed after the pre-rinsing stage and the washing stage, or a following intermediate rinsing stage in an automatic dishwasher. Alternatively, regeneration may first take place during the washing stage or the emptying procedure immediately following the washing stage. A period of at least one min is allowed to elapse after the introduction of the regenerating material into the softener, after which the ion exchanger is rinsed and the water coming from it during a certain period immediately following rinsing is allowed to run to waste.
