A METHOD FOR PRODUCING ELEMENTAL SULFUR FROM SULFUR-CONTAINING GASES

A method is disclosed for producing elemental sulfur (21) and reduced/oxidized sulfur compounds from sulfur containing gases (12, 23). The method comprises mixing a primary gas stream (12) with a secondary gas stream (14) to produce a combined gas stream having a preselected stoichiometry and contacting the combined gas stream with a sorbent/catalyst (19). The sorbent/catalyst (19) is selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, and other Claus-type catalysts, sodium/alumina, zinc ferrite, zinc titanate, and other mixed metal oxides, and mixtures thereof. The sorbent/catalyst (19) produces elemental sulfur (21), for example, by the reactions: SO2 + 2H2 ---> 2H2O + S, SO2 + 2CO ---> 2CO2 + S.
