Reaction sintered SiC which contains pores filled with Si is given a coating of an inert metal by initially dissolving out the Si pores near the surface of the body using a substance which does not attack the SiC. The inert metal is then reduced in a high temp. process to leave a layer of metal which fills the pores vacated by Si. USE/ADVANTAGE - For producing a chemically resistant layer on SiC bodies, esp. jewellery. Body has excellent corrosion resistance but is lighter than solid Au.
