The proposal is for a process for detecting irregular running in an internal combustion engine (10) in which a signal processing arrangement (13 - 19, 30, 50, 51) detects the running of the engine from a signal (Ub) arising at a generator (11) driven by the engine (10) or at a load (12) connected to said generator (11). The signal (Ub) contains components of longer (Tm) and shorter (Tmn) duration which are assessed both separately and together in an evaluation unit (15). The short-duration (Tmn) signal component can be derived from commutation oscillations (40) occurring in the signal Ub if the generator (11) is designed as an a.c./three-phase generator with rectifiers and phase junction.
