Vibration damping hinge joints for jet engine exhaust nozzles

A vibration-damping pivot for a flap of a variable-area jet engine exhaust nozzle comprises a flap mounting lug 60 received in a clevis mounting bracket 42, 44, 46 with a pivot pin 56 and a spring 64 applies a friction damping force between the side of the lug 60 and a flanged bearing 52 in the clevis arm 44. In the case of an aft pivot translation of the outer flap 14 relative to the divergent flap 30 is accommodated as well as pivoting by fitting the hinge pin 56 in a slider block 100 which slides in a slot 98 in the flap mounting lug 96. The spring 64 may be enclosed in a tubular cannister to preset the biassing force.
