PURPOSE: To increase the number of basic input/output system (BIOS) supports of a device by storing me part of the BIOS in a direct access storage device. CONSTITUTION: This device is composed of system processor CPU 26, random access main memory RAM 32, read only memory ROM 36, and at least one direct access storage device DASD, and this ROM 36 includes the first part of the BIOS. This first part of the BIOS initializes the CPU 26 and the DASD, and reads a master boot record from the DASD to the RAM 32. This first part confirms whether or not the master boot record is compatible with system hardware according to whether or not data from the data segment of the master boot record are coincident with the data included in the part, and loads the remaining BIOS part from the DASD to the RAM 32. Thus, the ROM 36 stores only a part of the BIOS, so that the number of supports can be increased.
