PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substances in high selectivity under relatively mild conditions by reacting diphenyl and/or 4-methyldiphenyl with penta-an/or hexamethylbenzene in the presence of a catalyst and carrying out transmethylation. CONSTITUTION:One mol diphenyl and/or 4-methyldiphenyl and 1.5-20mol penta- and/or hexamethylbenzene are reacted in the presence of a catalyst, such as a Lewis acid, protonic acid or solid acid, at 50-150 deg.C to carry out transmethylation and provide the subject substances. The reaction is normally carried out in a solvent, such as 1,2-dichloroethane or nitrobenzene. AlCl3 is especially preferred as the catalyst without causing corrosion in apparatus. The 4,4'-dimethyldiphenyl is useful as a raw material for producing 4,4'- diphenyldicarboxylic acid which is a raw material for polyester resins. |
