Soaps may be brightened by the use of a compound of formula <FORM:1017435/C4-C5/1> where R1 is hydrogen or C1- 3 alkyl, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalky, aralkyl or aryl, and X is chlorine, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkoxyalkoxy or -NR3R4, where R3 and R4 are hydrogen, unsubstituted or substituted C1- 3 alkyl, or aryl (see Division C2].ALSO:Plastics such as P.V.C. can be brightened by the use of a compound of formula <FORM:1017435/C3/1> where R1 is hydrogen or C1- 3 alkyl, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, and X is chlorine, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkoxy-alkoxy or -NR3R4, where R3 and R4 are hydrogen, unsubstituted or substituted C1- 3 alkyl, or aryl (see Division C2).ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1017435/C2/1> where R1 is hydrogen or C1-3 alkyl, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, and X is chlorine, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkoxyalkoxy or -NR3R4, where R3 and R4 are hydrogen, unsubstituted or substituted alkyl radicals of up to 3 carbon atoms (including, e.g., hydroxyethyl) or aryl radicals; and their production by (i) condensing, in the presence of an acid acceptor, a compound <FORM:1017435/C2/2> with a compound <FORM:1017435/C2/3> or (ii) reacting, in the presence of cupric chloride, a compound <FORM:1017435/C2/4> with a compound <FORM:1017435/C2/5> Compounds in which X is Cl may be reacted with alkoxides, phenoxides or amines to give the corresponding products. The compounds of the invention are brightening agents (see Divisions C3, C5 and D1) which may be incorporated in casting or spinning compositions for the production of synthetic bodies such as films, fibres and threads, or in cellulose ester or nitrocellulose varnishes.ALSO:Textile materials, paper and leather may be brightened by the use of a compound of formula <FORM:1017435/D1-D2/1> where R1 is hydrogen or C1-3 alkyl, R2 is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, and X is chlorine, hydroxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkoxyalkoxy or -NR3R4, where R3 and R4 are hydrogen, unsubstituted or substituted C1-3 alkyl, or aryl (see Division C2). Specified materials are polyamide, polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, polyester and cellulose ester fibres. The brightening agents may be applied as solutions in organic solvents or as solutions or dispersions in water. In examples fabrics are treated with aqueous baths containing brightening agent, oleyl sulphonate and formic acid. |
