Screw lifting device 14 for raising and lowering the press roll 2 in a paper machine or similar machine. In a screw lifting device 14 connected between the load arm 4 and auxiliary arm 7 of the roll 2 the lifting screw 17 has been mounted so that it can rotate relative to the frame 15 of the lifting device 14, but is axially static, and the lifting nut 19 has been fitted so that it cannot rotate on the load arm 4. Raising and lowering are performed by turning the lifting screw 17, thereby raising or lowering the roll 2 depending on the turning direction. <IMAGE>
