METHOD FOR PREPARING CHLORCONSISTING ETHERS OF P- NITROPHENOL

Ethers of p-nitrophenol have significant insecticide, fungicide, bactericide, and herbicide properties and find application in agriculture as directly used preparations, or as intermediates for the manufacture of other biologically active substances. Yield rates and purity of the final product are increased through the use of readily accessible reagents in moderate reaction conditions. The method involves chlorinating a solution of p-nitrophenol ether in lower organic acids (HCOOH, CH3COOH) and alcohols (CH3OH) with gaseous chlorine while stirring it at temperatures ranging from 20-40 degrees C. The pure product is obtained by removing the 2-chloro-4-nitrophenol ether crystals out of the reaction mass, or by recrystallization of methanol.
