Sequential numbering of postal items

A number of postal items are prepared for delivery. Unique numbers are applied to each item consisting of a postal item number and the serial number of the equipment used to process the items. The number may be formed using a numetric system with or without a base. - The unique number may be made up of a combination of at least a part of two numbers associated with the stack of postal items being processed. Both numbers used may be truncated.
