The piston machine comprises at least one cylinder (1) enclosing a piston (2) together with which it forms a chamber (7), an inlet duct (8) including an intake valve (9), and an exhaust pipe (10) including a discharge valve (11), the intake pipe being intended to transfer compressible fluid into the chamber (7) when the intake valve opens, whereas the exhaust pipe is intended to transfer the pressurised compressible fluid into a user circuit (12) when the discharge valve is opened. The valves (9) and (11) are positioned with respect to one another such that the pressurised compressible fluid, in order to penetrate into the exhaust pipe (10) when the discharge valve opens, is obliged to flow through at least part of the volume (15) swept by the intake valve when the latter moves between its open and closed positions. This is in order to reduce the dead (residual) internal volume of the piston machine. <IMAGE>
