COMPENSATION PLATE FOR LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT

PURPOSE:To allow black and white display by using a polymer liquid crystal film which is immobilized with a twisted nematic orientation having a uniform monodomain structure. CONSTITUTION:The high-polymer liquid crystal which exhibits the uniform and monodomain twisted nematic orientability and can easily immobilize this orientation state is heat treated on an oriented film to form the uniform and monodomain twisted nematic structure: thereafter, the liquid crystal is cooled, by which the orientation in the liquid crystal state is immobilized without impairing the orientation. Namely, the polymer liquid crystal has not only the good orientability but also a glass phase in the lower temp. part than the nematic phase. This polymer makes the twisted nematic orientation in the liquid crystal state and attains the glass phase at the temp. below the liquid crystal transition point if an optically active compd. is added to this polymer. The twisted nematic structure is, therefore, easily immobilized. The black and white display is attained in this way.
