PURPOSE:To obtain the optical switch of simple structure which has small wavelength dependency and no polarization dependency by using a compound semiconductor of a cubic system 43m for a substrate, forming the substrate by using the surface azimuth '110' or '111' of the crystal, and providing electrodes on the input port and output port sides on waveguides. CONSTITUTION:The substrate 11 which is formed of the compound semiconductor of the cubic system 43m by using the surface azimuth '110' or '111' functions to decrease the refractive index to one of polarized light beams incident on waveguides 12 and 13 and increase the refractive index to the other polarized light. Further, the electrodes 15a - 15d provided on the sides of the input ports 12a and 13a, and output ports 12b and 13b on the waveguides 12 and 13 control refractive index variation according to the combination of electrodes which are applied with a voltage, thereby controlling the demultiplexing direction of light. Consequently, the waveguide type optical switch which uses the semiconductor substrate has superior wavelength dependency and polarization dependency with the simple structure. |
