Oxidation treatments by ion bombardment or post-discharge result in the formation on the surface of metals and alloys capable of being passivated of an oxide layer a few micrometres in thickness, which protects the substrates from subsequent corrosion. The gas activated by the electrical discharge is brought into contact with the surface of the article (2) to be oxidised, raised to a temperature of between 350 and 650 DEG C. The invention can be employed in particular for forming a protective coating on an element or a complete zirconium alloy framework of a fuel assembly of a water-cooled nuclear reactor.

|
