The method, which can be used in particular to transmit or store high-quality audio signals in digital form, involves cutting up the audio signal into sample blocks and submitting the samples from each block to a coding by time-frequency transform, the coefficients of which are transmitted in digital form, the inverse operations being carried out on reception. At least the most significant coefficients of the transform of each block are subjected to a predictive and adaptive coding utilising the stationarity of the signal over a period greater than that of a block. ��
