<p>Polymeric basic aluminum halides having the empirical formula: Al2(OH)6-yXy where X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, y has a numerical value from 0.7 to 3, and whose polymer distribution as characterized by size exclusion chromatography is: (a) 100% of the polymers are found in Bands II, III and IV, and (b) Band III contains at least 25% of the polymer; are obtained by reacting aluminum metal with HX in water at a temperature of about 70 DEG C to about 100 DEG C, where X is halogen, wherein the concentration of product in solution is about 8 to about 35 wt. %.</p> |
