In order to reduce contact bounce between the overlapping ends of a magnetic reed and magnetic contact member in a sealed envelope, the reed is locally flattened adjacent its overlapping end. The nickel-iron reeds in Fig. 1 are made from cylindrical rods which are initially flattened to a uniform thickness over substantially their entire inner lengths 4, 6 and 5, 7. They are further flattened at 8, 9 adjacent the overlapping contact ends 6, 7 so that although the parts 8, 9 are the most flexible, the movement of the contact ends 6, 7 on energization is predominantly due to the flexure of parts 4, 5. Each of the reeds such as 32 (Fig. 3, not shown) is made from a cylindrical nickel-iron rod by compressing the rod between two dies shaped to produce a flattened portion 36 at the fixed end, an intermediate, undeformed cylindrical section 38, a flattened portion 37 which is thicker and shorter than portion 36, and an overlapping contact portion 34. The contact portion 34 is also slightly flattened to provide a good contact surface. Polarized change-over contact units using the above described reeds are mentioned. The reeds may co-operate with rigid fixed contacts and the contact areas may be coated with gold or rhodium. |
