PURPOSE:To obtain the optical memory method extremely useful for storing data by utilizing the various characteristics generated from a difference between the material characteristic of the excitation state of a material and the material characteristic of the base state. CONSTITUTION:The light pulses released from a laser or other light source 1 excites the compd. in a memory material 2. The data stored in such a manner is monitored and read out by passing the other beam, for example, the light beam from a light source 3 through the memory material 2, i.e. memory bit, by which the transmission can be searched. The transmission intensity of the searching beam is measured by a detector 4. The light source 1 used for writing to the memory medium 2 is otherwise used again for reading out. However, the light lowered to 1/10 the intensity of the light radiated for the purpose of writing or below is used in order to prevent the significant generation of the excited state.
