NEW MATERIAL: A polymer selected from aβ-styrenephosphonic acid polymer, anα-styrene phosphonic acid polymer and copolymers between any of the styrenephosphonic acids and one or more other ethylenic unsaturated polymerizable monomers. EXAMPLE: A poly(α-styrenephosphonic acid). USE: An oral cavity composition comprises a polymer having 2,000-10,000 molecular weight, which is substantially a water-insoluble nonionic antimicrobial agent, improves the delivery of the agent to the surface of the oral cavity and protection of the surface of the oral cavity and reduces crisis of gingivitis. PROCESS: A monomer or a monomer mixture is polymerized in a solvent in the presence of a free radical initiator under heating. The prepared granular polymer is mixed with water and the solution is adjusted to pH8-10 by an aqueous solution of NaOH. The solution is dialyzed against water to give the purified polymer as the new substance.
