Organosilazanes having higher prepolymerization molecular weights are prepared by the ammonolysis of organohalosilanes at a temperature of about 15 DEG -23 DEG C. Their higher molecular weights facilitate the polymerization of the organosilazanes to preceramic polysilazanes.
