Gas driven medical or dental handpiece assembly (10) of the type having a turbine driven dental tool (28). A sterile coolant supply is usable with the handpiece (24, 25) to provide liquid fluid under pressure to irrigate the patient site and cool the dental tool. The coolant fluid is derived from a replaceable cartridge (39) connected to the handpiece. A flexible diaphragm (58) divides the cartridge into a propellant chamber (59) and liquid chamber (60). A propellant gas under pressure is introduced into the virtually empty propellant chamber to displace the diaphragm moving the liquid through a fluid conduit (54, 79, 70) to the tip of the handpiece. The propellant is derived from a portion of the compressed gas used to drive the turbine (29). Another portion of the compressed gas is diverted to a chip air conduit (55) of the handpiece. Sterilization of the entire handpiece without the cartridge is facilitated. Use of conventional common water supply as irrigant-coolant is eliminated.
|
