To prevent damage to a combination folding blade sheet gripping cylinder (6) which also carries counter cutter strips (8) at a predetermined fixed diametrical distance from the center of rotation of the cylinder, and a folding jaw cylinder, upon occurrence of paper jams, paper accumulations or stoppers in advance of the nip between said cylinders, the folding jaw cylinder is formed with recesses, such as a circumferential groove (18, Fig. 4) or a flattened surface (20, Fig. 3) in the region which, upon roll-off of the cylinders against each other, will be opposite the counter cutting element (8) of the combination folding blade - gripping cylinder (6). This recessed area, thus, will be located between adjacent folding jaws (13) on the folding jaw cylinder. The width of the gap at the nip, thus, will be increased at the position of the unyielding counter cutter element (8) on the combination folding blade gripper cylinder (6). At other circumferential regions, the diameter of the folding blade - gripper cylinder can be increased by adjusting its circumferential dimension by a suitable circumferential dimension adjustment system (17) retained in eccentrically journalled bolts or rods. The recess, that is, the groove (18) of the flattened surface (20) can be filled by an elastically compressible material, or bridged by a yielding material, such as a strip of spring steel.
