A dialysis device, e.g. for purifying blood, consists of semipermeable diaphragms 10 and 11 arranged in flat parallel relationship or in spiral shape with spacer members 12 between every other pair of adjacent layers of diaphragm, the spacer members having elevations 4 and 15 which co-operate to bring the two layers of diaphragm between adjacent spacer members into mutual engagement at defined intervals and lesser elevations 18 and 19 maintaining the layers of diaphragm a definite distance apart at points between the points of mutual engagement. The elevations 18 and 19 have small end surfaces 20 and 21 compared with end surfaces 16 and 17 of elevations 14 and 15 such that while the space 23 containing blood has its volume appreciably reduced the area utilizable for diffusion is not greatly reduced. Purifying liquid, e.g. a salt solution, circulates in the spaces 22 between the elevations and the diaphragms with which the impurities diffusing through the diaphragms are removed. Inlet and outlet channels for the blood are provided at opposite sides of the device. Each channel is connected to a nozzle 6 (Fig. 1) at the exterior of the device and the channels have lens-shaped diversion member (26) (Fig. 4, not shown) provided between the spacing members and the diaphragms 10 and 11. These have narrow diversion tubes (27) through which blood passes to spaces 23. The salt solution is supplied and removed through nozzles 7 and 8 (Fig. 1). The elevations may be made so resilient that if the pressure in the salt solution decreases the entire device is compressed. |
