Forming multiway optical fibre junction holder - using anodic bonding between dissimilar glass plates to seal junction in grooved channel interface

A silica-glass plate (19) contains an array of optical-fibre junctions (13,14,15) in triangulate grooves (16,17,18) on its upper surface. This is covered by a plate of alkali-oxcidic glass (20) and closed by anodic-bonding (21) under pressure and raised temps. The grooves are tapered at each end to contain the fibre sheaths which are forced inwards during the process thus sealing the junctions hermetically. ADVANTAGE: Junctions are clamped and sealed in single operat-ion and thermal expansion of glass is matched to fibre.
