The matrix display panel (39) is formed on a carrier plate (40) that has a number of strip shaped LED elements (B,G,R) arranged vertically in parallel. The LED devices are of blue, green and red and alternate across the width of the plate. A second layer is formed over the LED devices that are in the form of the LCD strip elements (41). The width of the LED and LCD elements are elected to define the size of a display point. The assembly is covered by a protective transparent material. Selective actuation of LED and LCD elements creates the required display image. ADVANTAGE - Reduces complexity and improves display quality.
