An electrochemical sensor which only delivers current when a specific gas is being oxidised or reduced has a converter unit including an electrode operated at a potential equal or close to that at which a prod. is produced from the electrolyte. Such prods. may be gases which react with the gas being investigated to produce a prod. whose presence is indicated by the sensor. Such prod. gases may be formed on an electrode common to both sensor and converter unit. Converter unit and gas sensor electrode may be in the same plane, e.g., on a single foil, but electrically sepd.. ADVANTAGE - Method can indicate presence of further gases to which no response would be made at lower potentials.
