The automotive fuel tank has a filler pipe incorporating a siphon section. This section (15) is outside the tank (1). The position and/ or the shape of the inlet inside the tank, and the shape of the tank itself, are such that when filling up the flow of the fuel into the tank is laminar. The siphon size can be such that the initial pressure requried to displace the fuel trapped in it is below that at which the filler nozzle shuts off. ADVANTAGE - Minimum discharge of fuel vapour to atmosphere.
