Keratinous materials

Keratinous materials, e.g. hair, wool, fur, feathers, silk, skin or nails, are dyed with a complex cation containing the grouping where M is a transition metal. The preferred metals are FeII, CoII and CuI but Ru, Os, Ni, Mo, Y, Cr and Rh are also specified. Examples of structures which the ligand may form with the metal are wherein R which are usually not the same may be alkyl, hydroxy, methoxy, amino, imino, chloro, bromo, iodo, nitro, sulphonate, carboxy, cyano, phenyl, benzyl, pyridyl, methyl, pyridyl, quinolyl, methyl-quinolyl and pyrryl. Adjacent R groups may form aromatic, aliphatic or hetero-cyclic rings. The complexes may be applied from alkaline solutions or the keratinous material may be pretreated with alkali. The complexes may be formed in situ. The dyeing solutions may further contain known adjuvants. Examples of dyeing hair are given.
